Underneath that temporary mess of electrical tape, there's enough good lead-free solder so no adjustment was necessary. Side-tracked by work, finally got a locomotive moving again for the first time in a week after picking up a few feet of wire for the controller to the board until DCC. Wire is $$$!

Let me check... 1:220, 1:220, 1:220, 1:220, 1:220... 😁

What's their name?

6 degrees of Cliff DeYoung: from F/X to the TV reboot of the Twilight Zone to Star Trek DS9, X-Files, the RoboCop TV series, Lois & Clark, Touched by an Angel or Timecop he seemed to specialize in being a single-episode guest star.

icyw yes, he was in a movie w/ Kevin Bacon.

I knew about locomotives needing to carry sand for on-demand traction, but TiL on steam locomotives they store the sand in domes on top and then there are pipes that lead down in front of the wheels.

That serious looking black and gold 2 car DMU train at the lower right is another excursion train. It runs "rom Kagoshima to Hayato then up into the mountains to Yoshimatsu" (tripadvisor, see pic alt for link). I feel like I should put a #woodworking tag for the interior.
April 7, 2025 at 10:49 PM
I would also point out the train has an open observation platform at the front, so maybe it's not going Shinkasen velocities.
April 7, 2025 at 10:43 PM
It just dawned on me that the original post's pic is actually a model train in an #ngauge layout. That's really realistic. Also, zooming in you can really see what must be an observation platform in the front.

From a couple weeks ago, this was a pretty good first stabilized picture with manual settings for it being in the dark with no light except the lights of the Yamanote-line cars.
April 7, 2025 at 10:23 PM
The UI for adding alt-text says "ALL" instead of "ALT" lately when you are adding a picture. Odd.
April 7, 2025 at 10:17 PM
Have there been any magnetic couplers that also transmit power yet or is this the first? That seems like a big deal (he says as he looks at flickering lights on the E235 Yamanote line). We'll see them in Z scale in 10 years or so.😁

I'm not sure the BR Class 47 locomotives look better with pointy hats or not.

"What is the product of the fundamental constants of nature, adjusted for the dimensionality of spacetime, divided by the entropy of the universe at the moment of cosmic balance?"

The "proof" is in the screenshots. This is some high-level nonsense.

We're probably a 1,000 years away from figuring out what the ultimate question is to life, the Universe, and everything whose answer is 42, but just in case I pressed an AI into formulating one:

"What is the sum of all natural laws, when expressed as a dimensionless quantity in arbitrary units?"
April 7, 2025 at 12:12 AM
From Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

"Tell us!"

"Alright," said Deep Thought. "The Answer to the Great Question..."

"Yes...!"

"Of Life, the Universe and Everything..." said Deep Thought.

"Yes...!"

"Is..." said Deep Thought, and paused.

"Yes...!"

"Is..."

"Yes...!!!...?"

"Forty-two," ...

Here was what I was originally thinking for making a lift bridge out of two trestle bridges: cut the angled ends off one so the straight ends form a track for the bridge to go up, then cut the other in half & rotate the ends to form short towers. It doesn't have to lift up, only look like it could.
April 6, 2025 at 6:14 PM
These are Z scale Rokuhan bridges and they're even nicer than I expected. I will be studying a lot of lift-bridge pics and practicing weathering, but now that I look at them I'm not sure I want to cut one in half. Maybe let the imaginary RR people complain about how the boats made it underneath.
April 6, 2025 at 5:34 PM
Not much time for the model railroad today, but the last of my pretariff orders arrived. My idea was to leave one bridge as is but cut the other in half and use the pieces on either end of the bridge to form a lift bridge (doesn't need to actually rise). otw I can't explain how ships get in🤔 #zscale

Neuromancer's had so many different covers I'm not the only one to wonder which one is "best", there's a reddit thread even. Maybe a better question is which cover is "yours". For me the first one I read as a kid but also re-reading years later and seeing so much more than cool tech & scifi action.

A story about taking a picture of a train (translation of original post in case it shows up in Japanese)

Yes, I think it's mainly used for baking judging by the price. Well, they have that cold brew concentrate lately which is in the ballpark.

I did find this odd "Autocrat" brand coffee syrup... 32 oz for $15 but I think from Rhode Island. This may be the one you're looking for.
April 5, 2025 at 1:03 AM
I think Camp syrup in milk? I remember trying it a few times and really enjoying it, probably mainly the sugar and caffeine.

Bluesky gets me.
April 5, 2025 at 12:13 AM
Are you seeing two identical replies here? Have I found some kind of bug or is it my UI?
April 5, 2025 at 12:10 AM
It almost looks reasonable when you see the switch.

Different flash settings, same lighting.
