3. It confirms the prediction we made in our 2011 paper that Naomiviridae are far more ubiquitous than the previous metagenomic data would suggest, exactly because of the underrepresentation of phages with modified DNA. cc @bejalab.bsky.social

A new family of globally distributed lytic roseophages with unusual deoxythymidine to deoxyuridine substitution
Rihtman et al. report the discovery of two novel roseophages containing deoxyuridine
(dU) instead of the canonical nucleobase deoxythymidine. Such a substitution results
in resistance to a commonly us...

2. It enables us to investigate (at single cell/particle resolution) the viruses that we would otherwise miss because traditional tagmentation methods wouldn't work on them, due to DNA modification which are quite common in phages

This is so cool, for several reasons:
1. It is a really great method for single cell sequencing of environmental samples that can uncover host-virus relationships better (IMO) than previous methods.

It's one of the red flags definitely. (I had no idea it was called that). How do you even use it? I don't have it on my keyboard...

yeah colour me sceptical on this claim. There are hundreds, if not thousands of new bacteriophages being isolated on a huge variety of hosts every year. Infection across bacterial species, let alone genera, let alone family, let alone order, let alone class are exceptionally rarely observed.

I pay special attention to this "breadcrumbing" practice. Either cite the psper that has the experimental procedure detsiled or write the protocol in your own Methods
