I like talking about things that start with “p” like politics (pragmatic progressive), psychedelics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, Portland, the Pacific Northwest & “m”—music, mushrooms. Parent of 2 teens. Daimista (IYKYK).
Been wondering the same!

No problem, just gotta convince people to turn over their checking accounts to their AI agent who’ll do all the shopping for you!

Supposedly if you got those worms you might only realize it when you’d look in the mirror and see one in your eyeball! Can’t remember what they were actually called but I think they were called Tumbo or Mango worms locally

Far preferable to malaria, but unpleasant for sure. Though fwiw I liked the anti-parasite medicine we were supposed to take to not get the worms that can cause elephantiasis even less, so once I figured out that was actually rare & treatable early on I stopped taking it

I would have long, incredibly vivid dreams including a nightmare that I still get creeped out thinking about 23 years later.

They put a black box warning on it a few years ago (I’m assuming you’re referring to Mefloquine/Larium), sounds like yours or my experience is on the milder end of things

it's stunning the way you almost forget how many opportunities this corrupt mess of a country had to put an unremarkable grifter away before he could do significant harm

W/o any immunity it’s really dangerous, knew a couple Peace Corps folks who got laid out for ~2 weeks, super sick, lost a ton of weight. There was a young French woman working for a Catholic charity where I was who died from it. Nasty stuff. And the standard prophylactic med has bad side effects.

Would far rather get West Nile than Malaria. Did Peace Corps in Cameroon in West Africa, very high endemic malaria zone. It kills a lot of babies there but if it doesn’t kill you in infancy you get some immunity, meaning it’s like a bad cold that most folks get hit with every so often.

Don’t think there’s any malaria transmission in the US period. Don’t think there’s been domestic transmission since the 1800s, when it used to be around in the gulf states.

Between global warming & RFK it’ll probably return at some point but it’s not hitting the PNW anytime soon

Dam, that’s Vance? Thought this was another one of those “dogs that ate a bee” pictures that people were sharing around the other day

His head’s been looking increasingly cube-shaped lately

Why’d they use that shot from the new Frankenstein movie for this article?

This was the story of late rapper Coolio—he beat a crack cocaine addiction by working out in the woods on a support crew

Truly an impressive achievement you’ve kept it going so long. Must be one of what, 5 or 6 personal blogs left?

It is fundamentally *not reasonable* for people in blue states and across the country to have the government besieging us

This is not normal and okay, and the fact that people find this rightfully enraging is necessary to build resistance and continue working to stop what's going on
