I was never that invested in Fumiko so maybe I am biased but...
Fumiko existed just to create more tension in some points of the story:
-Denji and Asa cant happen cause Fumiko is ther
-Fumiko treats Denji like garbage (setup for his animality v humanity)
-Betraying Nayuta

Socially I think we have already been living it. Specially if you think it in the global sense think the poorest countries in the world.
And we really were just missing the high tech shaenanigans
