The sentimentality is fairly dated (it was written in 1977), and while he squarely tells you up front, his bias skews fairly directly into English Exceptionalism. Still, a very engaging read; and at 200 pages, extremely accessible.

attend symphony concerts and operas and ballets, and go to museums and libraries and pubs, and attend lectures and debates and intellectual salons? I know I’m not alone.
