How often do they get to check their accuracy? Once an election, right? And a poll two months before an election is basically impossible to check for accuracy. So they try to use other measures of quality other than accuracy. Also, having a model they tweak often gives them something to talk about.

The only positive thing I’ve found with poor US vaccination records is that I can say get a TDaP booster without fuss by saying I don’t remember when my last one was. And yes, I have been told by medical professionals that I don’t need one after cutting myself on rusty metal 5+ years from my last.

I had a lengthy discussion with an old CS Prof of mine back in 2022 about LLMs. His position was “this came out of nowhere,” and mine was “this is the largest incremental improvement I’ve seen in the last 15 years, but it’s still just incremental progress.” In the end, he didn’t believe me.
