The 2024 transmission build # is out from Grid Strategies and ACEG. Mileage is up, but it's nothing compared to the past. cleanenergygrid.org/wp-content/u...

Yet transmission spending is up. Why? The answer is in my report from last year: rmi.org/insight/mind.... Time to close the gap! #EnergySky

today, I drafted comments for a FERC docket on local transmission and prepared a presentation on interregional transmission enhancements for an upcoming RTO stakeholder meeting

despite all the federal uncertainty, still feeling energized by day-to-day tasks ⚡🔌💡

tell me again why you think the IRA should be repealed if it's driving 10 new EV battery manufacturing facilities in this year alone, mostly in red states/districts (thanks @dangearino.bsky.social @insideclimatenews.org for the reporting) #EnergySky

#EnergySky news flash from SEIA: renewables are the FASTEST resources available to meet near-term load growth demands. Now is the time to build baby build without picking and choosing winners/losers arbitrarily through market constructs. seia.org/blog/we-need...

let me guess #EnergySky: Texas built more transmission to its neighbors to prevent a repeat of Uri, right?

...right?

A fun text to start my day from a colleague at #COP29. Post-election has been tough for so many of us in climate but this text warmed my heart and reminded me that so many of us on #EnergySky are collectively fighting for what we feel is right 💪🥰💡🔌

pics from the panel I was on at #NASUCA earlier this week on increased spending on local transmission and my new report on the regulatory gap driving it

what a great discussion with Greg Poulos & Tricia DeBleeckere!

if you haven't read the report yet #EnergySky 💡🔌: rmi.org/insight/mind...

(12/n) In the report, we list 11 actions that can be taken at the federal, state, and regional levels to close the regulatory gap. Importantly, action must be taken at all three levels to close the gap fully. No one entity (state PUC, FERC, RTO) can fully close the gap alone.

(6/n) At the state level, local lines are often exempted from receiving a permit (CPCN) because they are too low in voltage (see map below) and/or rebuilds of existing infrastructure. At the regional level, RTOs often claim these local lines are outside their purview. And at the federal level...

(5/n) As we explore in the report, the regulatory gap means that local Tx projects, which are planned by a single utility to meet its own needs (as compared to regional Tx, which is planned regionally to meet holistic needs), are not subject to oversight at the state, federal, or regional levels

(2/n) Transmission *mileage* and $ spent on *high-voltage* assets has been going *down* in recent years. E.g.) in 2021, $ spent on >230 kV lines was just 34% compared to a high of 72% in 2014. And, Brattle found recently that 90% of recent Tx spending went to lower-voltage reliability projects.

(1/n) Transmission costs have been rising rapidly across the US, making up 24% of residential bills in 2020 compared to 10% in 2005. Tx spending in the US hit an all-time high in 2023. But...
