I’ll show you an older section. Here’s an Egyptian tomb, mourners outside, a man climbing the tomb shaft (ca. 1200–1000 BCE), ostracon in the Manchester Museum (Acc. no. 5886): egyptmanchester.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...

We have a copy of this map as a wall decoration. A very cool way to remind us of the Roman towns we’ve visited.

Incidentally, castellum Gelduba remained in Roman use until the mid-fifth century. It then became a Frankish settlement. Local Mervingian king Arpvar was buried here ca. 500 CE with rich grave goods, among which a gilded Spangenhelm. Excavated 1962, finds in Museum Burg Linn. (4/6)

Navigating with Google Maps to the Castellweg and Legionsweg – promising street names! – we found an info panel on this important site on the Lower Germanic limes (UNESCO World Heritage along the 400km lower Rhine valley). (3/6)

The castellum was founded near an oppidum (village) named Gelduba, of the Ubians (a Germanic tribe). During the Batavian Revolt led by Julius Civilis (69-70 CE) the castellum was attacked. Troops to defend Xanten were assembled here. Commander Vocula kept the fort but sustained heavy losses. (2/6)

Having shown Roman artillery at the Limes-Fest „Die Römer kommen!“ in Krefeld-Linn last weekend, we went to visit the find spot of many of Museum Burg Linn’s Roman artefacts: nearby castellum Gelduba. (1/6)

As of 2020 the “Sphinx” ceramics brand has ceased to exist. Sphinx art déco ashtrays can still be found – iconic Dutch design pieces and desirable collectibles.
P.S: Sphinx was adopted as company name in 1899, allegedly inspired by a sphinx statuette found in “king of pots” Regout’s legacy. (12/12)

This Facebook group on Egyptomania often has nice and interesting images. Today a photo of second-hand Sphinx ashtrays. Cool to see four different colours next to each other! Vintage items, usually found alone. Until recently I wasn’t aware they were produced in various colours for a reason: (1/x)

On the market square in front of the museum, a full-size replica in bronze of the Pillar forms part of a modern art work titled Noviomagus (the name of the Roman settlement at Nijmegen), a giant sun dial.

Uploaded a photo of the Palermo Stone that I took on holiday in Sicily to Wikimedia Commons. It’s actually a composite of multiple photos I took with my phone of the object in its display case, background deleted. #Egyptology @wikimedia.bsky.social
