One of the most horrendous elements of white supremacy was the use of lynching to terrorize Black and minority populations. Over 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress, but none passed until the Emmitt Till Act in 2022. Till was just 14 when he was murdered by a white mob in 1955.

On 2/20/1956 officials issued arrest warrants for civil rights activists who organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. 89 brave folks put their lives and livelihoods on the line to peacefully lead the fight for the belief that all men are created equal. May we all have such grit and grace under fire.

On this day 1942, Huey Newton, one of the founders of the Black Panthers, was born. Newton was an illiterate high-school graduate who taught himself to read. He attended Merritt College and San Francisco School of Law. He went on to form the Black Panthers in 1966 in Oakland.

Today I recognize the 101 HBCUs in the United States. These institutions produce 25% of all African American graduates with STEM majors and 20% of all African American college graduates. If you believe in academic advancement and excellence for all, supporting HBCUs is a great place to start.

February 3rd is a big day for baseball. On this day in 1920, The Negro Baseball League was founded and in 1989, former Saint Louis Cardinals first baseman Bill White was named the president of MLB’s National League. He was the first African-American to head a major sports league.
