Discord might be a good alternative. I use this with several friend groups and it has options to create distinct chat threads as well as the voice channels. If using discord there might be opportunity for "virtual coffee chats" as well. There are also robust options for moderation as well.

I have always felt frustrated that Facebook was the format for most of the support groups that I follow. More than happy to change!
