The ramblings of a welder /fabricator /metalshaper... Fighting rust daily to keep heritage cars going for as long as possible.

Follow me to see some cars thought to be unrepairable, resurrected and saved from the cold jaws of a bailer.
The Apprentice, ready to do some cutting.

This section can be bought as an aftermarket panel.- quite a good pressing.
Prepped it for plug welding, some weld through primer and welded in place.

Some more upside down welding and grinding. This area of the car is like new, no more rot!

Some zinc rich primer and ready for the lower inner arch/wheel house section to go back in.

Remember the repair sections I made in the previous post? All welded in, jacking plate - checkout that fusion on the back side of the panel.

All these folded and formed from like for like thickens of sheet metal. Some 2mm 2.5 others 1.6 mm and 1.2 mm

Some more up side down welding. Because I love it not. 😆

All the rotten bits cut out, Surface rust mechanically cleaned and naturalized. Ready for new metal.

Just have to make the repair panels first.

Driver side sil rear, Cutting back some previous repairs and unpicking layers until I find some good metal to start rebuilding from.

Well that escalated.... Just a before pic to show the hidden scabby bits behind the plastic trims, but who would have guessed it's that far gone?

The wheel house area that caps the end of the sill is removed to carry out internal repairs.

Some parts are salvageable, like this bumper bracket. Looks like it's been sat at the bottom of a bucket with water.

Some shot blasting action and the results speak for themselves.

It's pitted a little, but the bracket is heavy guage so it can go back on.

Wheel house repair complete! Another rusty area checked ✅ off the list.

Now, wait till you see the rust I found at the bottom of the wheel house area that caps the end of the sil.

Hello all, been on a small much needed break!
But back to the daily grind. No puns intended.

Remaking some slip rings for an electronic clutch

When machines get older and manufacturers no longer support them, you have to get creative.

A bit warm yesterday, the apprentice found the coldest spot in the shop for a kip while on the clock.

The inner wheel house has seen some better days. It was a good time to attack this area with a slitting disk. I peeled back the layers one at a time, carefully cutting back the rust until I reached good, solid metal to start rebuilding from.

That lower quarter/ boot pocket section I repaired a few posts back has been reinstalled.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it's not the MOT inspector shining his torch though a rusty hole.

Great upside down welding session to unite the two sections. Inner arch all welded in place and ground back.

Like new again!

Offering up the inner arch, this section is available as an aftermarket panel, however it didn't quite replace all the rusted out area, made an extra piece to fix that.
Marked out and trimmed the panels to fitup.

Like a glove! The replacement Boot floor section I made a couple of posts ago, now welded in, ground and a coat of zinc primer.

Good as new again.

Another section you can't buy as a replacement, Saved this by repairing the lower quarter/boot pocket area. Removed, sandblasted, made repair sections and welded them together.
Good as new again!

Remember that boot floor I took off in my last post?

Replicated it on to a new bit of sheet, ran it through the bead roller to get some swages. - These swages add strength back into the new panel.

Turned the flanges, and just like that we have a replacement boot floor section.
