Here's the American e-bike plan:

* Propose a bike lane in one part of town
* Let the "neighborhood council" shoot it down
* Record the resulting mayhem of e-bikes taking sidewalks
* Draft legislation requiring car insurance for bikes
* Watch demand evaporate
* Continue complaining about parking
"E-bikes and scooters displace 4x as much demand for oil as all of the EVs in the world"

And still no plans or incentives from our federal and provincial governments to help people choose bikes instead of cars. Quite the opposite, actually.

"It's galling that the benefits of our roadway system accrue so disproportionately to higher-income, able-bodied, nonminority adult drivers, while the risks and harms fall especially on nondriving children, older people, those with disabilities, and lower-income communities." @uminnpress.bsky.social

The number of children injured or killed by cars while walking or riding a bike has fallen steadily since the 1970s, but CDC researcher note that this decline is not because streets are safer, but because fewer kids are out and about in the first place.
Kids need freedom. Dangerous roads make it hard to grant it.
Bigger cars, distracted drivers and worried parents mean fewer kids are roaming freely.

Americans accept tens of thousands of deaths and *millions* of injuries every year of disproportionately young, healthy people as the reasonable cost of riding around cities in motorized easy chairs and if you say that’s an unacceptable and insane price to pay you sound like a crazy person.

Paris to Replace Parking Spaces With Trees
The city’s new climate plan promises to drop speed limits, repurpose traffic lanes, remove 60,000 parking spots and create urban “oases” to combat extreme heat.
