Educator and writer by trade, survivor by choice, I read a lot and drink outside the busy train stations of Tokyo and Osaka whenever I can.
Finishing a satisfying essay on architecture by Umberto Eco--drinking alcohol as I do and stabbing the page with my finger and a Yes Yes!--the first paragraph of the next essay, one by Jencks grabs me by the throat with "Architecture, like a woman of easy virtue, is highly suggestible."

Mom is unemployed, recently widowed, living on social security. I call her on dad's birthday -- the first since he passed away -- and she'd just gotten back from seniors' dinner with about 50 others in financial need. Rumor going around it might not last for long with rich-ass Trump in charge.

They made you feel important
By giving you something easy to understand
A simple yes or no
Black or white
Boy or girl
And told you those who say
There's a between
Are threatening
The very foundations
Of their society

How beautiful
How strong
How brave you are

How brilliant your fangs gleam

Centipedes be checking
Their brother's and sister's crotches,
Rubbing their chitchinus hands together,
Asking, What you got going on up there?

Ants march back worms
On grass that forgets its own name.
Caterpillars steal babies
And swaddle them in butterfly wings.
Bees sip tea from the clouds
While windows laugh and dance in the breeze:
All these tiny souls, lost, deserving.

Thank you Captain Cheesy Poof for tilting the windmills. Please take me as your pet, "Poncho" my hypocorism, fit only to rain yellow water upon your nobility, a shower of gold.

These people actively resist logical argument, interpreting it as a personal attack or as condescension.

This leaves only nonsense. So, let's baffle them with bullshit.

When you promise to write someone a poem and find it growing and growing in scope so much you're unable to begin.

I love the confusion you are in. That's where life is.

It is sad when you have to tell your Japanese spouse that they are right but it doesn't matter because this is Japan and the right way isn't the Japanese way.

My wife is having trouble with a coworker. He loses his temper easily, shouts, and makes sure everyone knows he is in charge of the department. "He has too much power," she said. "No," I said. "He has no more power than a little piece of poop clinging desperately to your butt." She laughed. I win.

I have gone from gas huffer in the high school parking lot to expsore of the weaknesses in one of Japan's largest educational pipelines. :)

Woke this morning from a nightmare, the plantive "I just wanted your arms around me" thundering across my skull.

Driving to work on an overcast morning, this song comes on, and my mind goes to my son entering his first year of elementary school, especially the excited and nervous look on his face 22 years ago; I tried to be a father who provided some sunshine and hope.
