Taught some classes, wrote some books, administered some administering, cried some cries. Lover of black black licorice and fine fine Italian coffee. Has adopted irreverence as a leadership philosophy.
When your son knows that you love the accordion AND the movie FARGO, so lifts a poster from the background of a scene in the film and turns it into an ACTUAL poster for you. 😍

Said a professional goodbye yesterday to Virginia Wright-Peterson, one of the finest leaders I've ever met. It was deeply moving hearing faculty testify how this Vice Chancellor for FINANCE made them feel seen & heard & valued. This is how institutional finance should work.

Because life is just so much of all the stuff right now, here are some pictures of the turkeys who occupy my neighborhood.

Rough week. But then got to work with colleagues at a local community college to develop pathways forward for students. And got a crazy caramel bar to boot. So there’s that.

Had an absolute blast working through the possibilities of wicked assignments and wicked pedagogies in classes ranging from chemistry to geography to English to music composition with the warm and wise faculty at Williams College. Collected LOTS of ideas for the 2nd Ed. of Creating Wicked Students!

Doing that thing where I get up early, drink too much Italian coffee, and then zoom in to give a talk to colleagues hosted by the University of Bergen. If you're up, and need a laugh, join us at 7 a.m. CST. Location: Zoom: uib.zoom.us/j/6804843184...

That day Senator Amy Klobuchar comes to your campus and praises the innovative work going on there--and then talks about how she's sponsoring legislation and budgeting to pull higher education in the U.S. out of the late 19th-century . . .

Our annual scholarship brunch at University of Minnesota Rochester, where we celebrate our amazing students and the individuals and foundations who support them. Could not be more proud!

When you get a chance for a slow morning and the time to read some @bcnjake.bsky.social, we call that a good start to the day.

Worst puzzle ever? Discuss.

At Indiana U today to discuss BOTH gen ed reform and wicked students. Very rare that a university bring me in to talk about both, so I'm looking forward to an adventure!

This time last year, I was so unhappy I was considering leaving the profession. A year later, new school, new job, new state, new state of mind. And my colleagues just gave me an (ethically sourced) unicorn horn.

Best. Job. Ever.

Really proud that a second edition of General Education Essentials comes out today. These programs exist at every US university and impact every student, yet we struggle to approach GE in thoughtful ways. This book, which now includes a section on leading productive revision, can help.
