This piece was made in reaction to my doctors dismissing many of my medical concerns over the years, especially my #ChronicIllness and nosebleeds

just saw the updated #Anthrocon rules and I've just gotta say that these rules will be incredibly discriminatory towards towards disabled and fat fursuiters, especially since last year @anthrocon.org staff couldn't tell the difference between a handler and my (employed) caregiver
Handlers will be permitted to assist with the donning and preparation of a costume in the staging area; however, handlers will not be permitted to walk in the parade. Exceptions will be made for handlers who are assisting performers with mobility challenges and participants under the age of 13 who need a parent or guardian to accompany them. Due to the nature of the parade lineup area, the presence of escalators on the parade route, and other aspects of the parade, Anthrocon strongly recommends that fursuiters whose costume design requires a handler (i.e. an oversized or overly bulky suit) should opt to participate in the Block Party as an alternative to the parade

Disability inclusivity is a tough topic.

A screenshot. While I am very happy for the winners of the Fallen London Cosplay Contest, it is incredibly disheartening to see the results of said contest, for one reason in particular. Specifically, seeing the promotion and approval of a Jovial Contrarian cosplay wherein the cosplayer does not have a wheelchair. I myself am a wheelchair user. In fact, I cosplayed the Jovial Contrarian for this same contest, though I did not enter into the same category, and honestly did not even intend to win, as this was a cosplay that I wanted to do for the importance of that character to me, not to be a winning entry, let alone direct competition. So please, do not get the impression from this that I am saying I should have won instead of this person, as that is wholly not what this is about. My problem lies in how disheartening and saddening it is to see a cosplay with such little acknowledgement towards a character's disability be held up and approved and then spread further by the company that owns this game and character. Obviously, Failbetter cannot stop or prevent the cosplayer from choosing to do this, however, they do control who they choose to have as winners. Unfortunately, this gives off the distasteful impression that a character's disability is something that can be ignored or forgotten about, something that I am all too familiar with in fandom and game spaces. How many times have you gone the full way through a piece of media where there 1) was a wheelchair user 2) the wheelchair user was allowed to be a whole human, and not just a pity-party on wheels 3) the wheelchair user was actually a wheelchair user, and not faking or extending an injury 4) there was no miraculous, disability-erasing cure 5) is not evil, and is not motivated by their disability to do horrible things and 6) there was no moment of the wheelchair user standing up and discarding their aid, set as a triumphant and happy moment at the end? I've only ever encountered it three times. Once is in Fallen London, although the Jovial Contrarian still falls into the unfortunate territory of "wheelchair users are only allowed to be old folks". He's more middle-aged though, so it's not as bad as it could be, but that requirement nixes a third of the representation I have. So in all of the hundreds of NPCs of Fallen London, there's one singular wheelchair user. I would love to include my PC, but they're not a canon character, nor are they allowed to be a wheelchair user in game. If you want characters who don't use a wheelchair, you can look towards any other character in the game. I must hold on to this one single character if I want to see someone even somewhat reminscent of myself. Not just in this game, but in media as a whole. I will acknowledge that I am bothered by this more than most folks, as this is an extremely personal issue. I would, however, like it if my perspective were thought about for a moment and considered. How would you feel, seeing an integral part of your identity reflected in a character, something that is rare and hard to find, then watching that part be brushed aside and to watch as others say that it's okay and fine? Especially from a company that makes a point of inclusivity in its team and writing. In conclusion, this has made me rethink my relationship to the company, despite my love of the game. Were there more well-written wheelchair users in the game, perhaps this would not have bothered me as much. Failbetter's involvment in this has left a sour taste in my mouth, and it does not speak well towards the inclusive environment they wish to cultivate.
