50 years since the ship sank. Almost 50 since the song was first written. 12 since I first learned about it. Almost 1 since I made these pieces based on it for a class assignment.

Those who lost their lives on the Edmund Fitzgerald will never be forgotten.

Giant waves crash on all sides while lightning from the dark, swirling clouds strikes the surface of the water. The bow of the Edmund Fitzgerald as it sinks below the surface of the water, descending slowly into nothing but shadow, only just barely lit from the light above. A a painting showing Detroit, Michigan, shrouded in darkness. The only light emanates from the bell tower in the Mariners’ Church on the right side of the piece, where they hold a memorial service for those lost in the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald every year. The bell is rung 29 times for every person on board when it sunk.

Adding the humpback whale here bc I love whales and finding out we nearly lost them to hunting devastated me a little. I’m so grateful conservation efforts brought them back. They’re beautiful creatures. :)
