Sky and Moors above Sheffield UK. In the foreground the path leading to the top of Stanage edge and the moor and fields to the sides of it. The grass and bracken have turned gold and bronze as winter approaches, bright in the sunshine with the colour enhanced by the earlier rain. In the distance the hills of the peak district. The sun is shining and the sky blue, but dominated by large white clouds, edged grey at the bottom where they are heavy with rain. And boy did it rain, the net few days saw flooding over lots of the country as Storm Claudia swept in.

Arrived at RSPB Ham Wall today and this little beauty landed within 2 inches of my foot, then flew up to the rails clearly disappointed in my lack of lunchtime crumbs🥰

View across the valley from Stanage Edge towards Bamford. The day, which had started out in bright sunshine, had become cloudy with bits of blue sky allowing the sun to filter through, lighting up areas of Larch forest to an almost luminous gold. In the foreground dry stone walls divide a field from the dark bronze dead bracken while further back more fields create patches of green vibrant with damp grass from the plentiful rain thats been falling for the last week. In the background the hills are dark in shadow, blurred by the haze. The sky is pale with scattered fluffy cumulus some with and ominous dark feel ready to drop more water (which it did!)

The wings have a coloured stripe on them which is often hidden when the bird is sitting, unless, as in this case, the wings are partially lifted showing off the beautiful, broad dark blue bordered by a thin edge of white.

Photo of a fallen tree resting over a mill pond. The tree is dead and bare its trunk and branches stripped of bark and in some places polished by the weather. Apart from the very end the only branches remaining are pointing down into the water like the legs of a giant stick insect, the branches on the top side presumably having broken off over time. behind the dead branch are the other trees lining the bank. The water is completely still allowing a near perfect reflection of both fallen and living trees. There are 2 ducks - a male and female mallard sitting on the end of the trunk near to the bank, the male has his beak tucked under his wing.

Sub adult gull photographed straight on. it is walking in the waves on the beach at the edge of the sea one foot just raised out of the water as it steps. With anthropomorphic interpretation it could be said to look imperious and unimpressed

A photograph of a Sri Lankan Frogmouth. It lives in the forest and is a nocturnal hunter often having a few preferred roosts for day which is how our guides were able to find it. It's a rather comical looking bird, related to Nightjars. This Photo is a slightly angled front shot of the bird in its typical resting very upright pose with its head in a vertical line with its body, showing tawny brown neck and chest with a necklace of oscillated whits spots. Its belly and vent is a paler buff also with scattered spots. Its face is more grey with a thick broad "frogmouth" bill, large dark eye with tufted feather that look like a bushy middle eyebrow. A challenge to photograph in a dark forest with the only bright sunlight filtering through the trees being directly behind it. The payment of feasting leeches were pulled off, once we got back to a decent path....their appetite well satisfied😱

The black Water Buffalo has now resurfaced in the pond of muddy water but has started swimming back to the bank. It's head, shoulders and start of its back are visible facing the left side of the photo. The Egret again has a wing extended to help its balance. The background is the lush foliage of Sri Lanka bathed in sunshine and a dark area as the water is shaded by the bushes.

This one was using the back of a Water Buffalo as its platform for fishing...until the Buffalo decided to submerge. Only the very top of the Buffalo's shoulders are now above water and the Egret has its wings open and has lifted one foot out of the water as it tries to keep its balance

The cliffs at Bempton were alive with nesting birds making a cacophony of sound that sometimes made it hard to think, but above the rose loud gull sounds, 3 birds fighting then something falling. The blue egg fell, pointy end first, looking like a tiny hot air balloon as the gulls wheeled round into a dive to try and retrieve it. I couldn't see if they succeeded or if it smashed on the waves below. Photo shows 3 gulls, one, sideways-on, braking in mid air, the other 2 flying away from the camera the adult gull just heading into a dive. In the right lower corner is a falling egg. Auk eggs can be very varied in colour and although Guillemot eggs are more likely to be blue than Razorbill eggs the shape is more in keeping with a Razorbill (chunkier) than a Guillemot (more slender)

The visit to this beautiful little wooded valley near Sheffield was meant to test the macro capabilities of the 2nd hand camera bought to fit the underwater housing but our attention was grabbed by a pair of robins that were flying in and out of bank with food every 30 sec or so. The nest was right next to the path so we sat on the opposite side without disturbing the conscientious parents at all. There were at least 4 chicks in the nest that we could see from magnifying the images and they were certainly well fed 😋. Photo shows a Robin half hidden in a hole in a mossy grassy bank in which it has made ints nest it face and wing can just be seen and it has insects in its beak. The head and necks of 3 chicks can be seen stretched up from the nest their bright yellow gapes wide open demanding food

For today's #BirdOfTheDay I think of Shags as being black , but I hadn't realised just how incredibly beautiful the colours of the wings are - not black at all 🥰 worth a #closeups
