I think BF1 is the one game where this approach kind of worked. Yeah, it's a borderline-scifi take on WW1 that really plays up experimental weapons and stuff, but it's stylized enough that it comes off more as "what if WW1 were cooler" than weird revisionism. Like old wolfenstein games or something.
