P.P.S. This is also not to gloss over the number of ethnic and religious minority groups in the area in question, including Palestinian Christians, the different sects of Islam in the region, secular groupings, etc. They of course must play a part too!

P.S. Something worth mentioning from a recent convo with someone I admire and respect. The roots of this conflict are not that Jewish people in the Levant and Muslim Palestinian Arabs are inherently incompatible. That’s neocolonial propaganda. But it is *hard* to dismantle.

I know it’s difficult to grapple with how the remainder of the Palestinian people (which I dearly hope will be allowed to remain) will face new ethnically/religiously Jewish leadership in the Levant.

But we have to start grappling with it now. Or any peace may be forfeit. /🧵

What happens if the new leaders that replace the Israeli war cabinet and Fatah don’t want reconciliation even if they agree to a state, which they very well might not?

We have to think about how the global community would and should respond to that. 4/

We have to push for a fulsome truth and reconciliation commission. Leaders will need to pay for genocide. But then new leaders from both sides will need to agree that reconciliation is necessary.

And we have to prepare for the possibility that they won’t agree to that. 3/

I hope it’s not too trite or superficial to say that Jewish people and Muslim Arab Palestinians in the Levant do not get along.

Even if we get a single state with equal rights, the deep resentment and pain will remain. There needs to be a fulsome reckoning with that. 2/

By the way, there is likely so much more to come out about this shooting that will shed light on the details, but I definitely wanted to get ahead of the anti-trans backlash that is inevitably coming here. Overall, I’m doing my best not to jump to conclusions myself as well.

We need to actually #ProtectTransLives and #TransRights, instead of using them as a political football.
