Cthulhu Reborn is a small independent publisher of horror roleplaying books based around the horrors, gods, and bad vibes created by H.P. Lovecraft and friends.
We went all out with illustrating this book and also wrote a small additional section on Unnatural Places invented by Lovecraft. We think it's the most "purist" depiction of HPL's mythos, since it eschews all details not explicitly mentioned in one of his tales. It's less "gamey" than many versions.

Our Bundle of Holding deal is steaming along, having just passed 420 bundles (~13,000 books) sold. The deal (link @ end of thread) runs 8 more days.

I promised a "behind the scenes" anecdote for every 100 bundles sold so I now owe two.

Here's one .. about H.P. Lovecraft's Book of Yog-Sothothery.

We rarely use stock art 'out of the box' to illustrate stuff, instead chopping it up and remixing it to make our covers etc. But even so the task of guaranteeing 0% AI content (which everyone wants, including us) is becoming harder as time goes on. We want human horrors (like this), not GenAI slop.

Our Bundle of Holding deal (on for 10 more days) just hit a milestone -- 400 big bundles in the hands of wonderful gamers. We'll need to find another "behind the scenes" story to share.

A few folks have asked about our policy on GenAI. TLDR: We hate it. A lot ...

But the very best thing about a 1920s scenario based around the cut-throat world of soft drinks was ... inventing some labels for odd vintage sodas (or tonics, historically). These offer amazing prop potential for in-person games ... stick some labels on actual bottles of your player's beverages.

This was an inspired choice for a number of reasons. The grungy town of Bolton (mentioned by HPL in passing in a few tales, most notably Herbert West: Reanimator) is an interesting counterpoint to the lofty academic vibe of Miskatonic U. We were able to invent a whole new town map for Bolton, too!

When asked to contribute a Lovecraft Country scenario for Cthulhu Eternal, Rachael decided on an unusual locale and theme. Her scenario "Bottoms Up!" is primarily about weirdness in the new soft drinks by a brewery in Arkham's industrial neighbor, Bolton.

"Smoke Green" is a nifty little scenario that blends weirdness (the arrival of a new manufacturer of weird green-smoking cigarettes) with the political intrigue of Arkham's mayoral election. It also presents a challenge to players whose first solution to everything is "burn it down".

As part of the vibrant programme of Lovecraftian RPG sessions at the con, I ran two sessions -- one was the scenario that became "Smoke Green", the 3rd in our Lovecraft Country scenario series. Written by the talented Noah Lloyd it was a big hit when run on the top floor of the jazzy Biltmore Hotel.

Hallowe'en may be over but, like the Great Old Ones, our Bundle of Holding deal lives on in the secret places -- at least for another 14 days.

Last week I posted a behind the scenes anecdote about a scenario in the bundle; here's another featuring two more.

Happy Hallowe'en, to those who ... revel in the spirits of the holiday.

Not quite 100 years old, here's a poem by H.P. Lovecraft celebrating the spookiness of the season.

Also: this may just be the creepiest poem ever written mentioning lemurs. Just saying.

While all of the bundled adventure were released for Cthulhu Eternal in the last few years, some have a history that goes much further back than you'd imagine. One of these is the Victorian Era "Oscar Wilde meets the Mythos" adventure -- in its current incarnation titled "Starlight on the Gutter".

Elsewhere online I (perhaps foolishly) promised that I would share a behind-the-scenes anecdote about some of these adventures for every 100 bundles sold. So far it looks like I may need to conjure up at least 2 or 3.

Buckle in for some nostalgia.

In the Open Cthulhu Mythos SRD we give each of them game statistics for Cthulhu Eternal. All up there's 40+ eldritch creatures, a dozen arcane tomes, 20+ types of ritual magick, a bunch of supernatural artifacts and weird places, all statted up and ready to drop into your game. No IP hassles needed.

We have a MAJOR announcement coming soon about our Free/Open Source Lovecraft TTRPG, Cthulhu Eternal. To prepare, we thought it'd be good to answer (re-answer) some frequent questions we receive about Cthulhu Eternal ... What is it? What can be done with it? What versions exist? How is it 'open'?.
October 27, 2025 at 7:40 AM
A common question we get about this new C&C RPG is how does it relate to older Convict-era material we released 2016-19? The graphic summarizes, but basically: this book is a FULL game not a supplement, has about 3x the info about the setting & bundles heaps of Oz Mythos stuff not in the original.

We have a big announcement coming soon about Cthulhu Eternal. And as a consequence we've decided to move forward the release of the full Convicts & Cthulhu rulebook, so it coincides with our soon-to-be-announced promo. We also have some pics to share of the core book in print, to whet your appetite.

While the PDF version is $0, there's an option of getting an attractive softcover print version of the Quickstart. Here's a few pics of a copy that arrived recently.

If you are in Oz, the printed copies are produced locally (Lightning Source recently opened a printer here), which seems very quick.

In answer to multiple questions we've received -- no, our core game book for Convicts & Cthulhu (pictured) isn't being crowdfunded via Kickstarter or Backerkit or similar.

The Oct 31 date is an old-school release, with the book being available for purchase on that date to ship shortly thereafter.
September 18, 2025 at 12:09 AM
We were planning on releasing this at the same time as the big launch of the C&C Core Book (October 31), but enough folks seem to want to grab it now for their face-to-face gaming needs, so who are we to say no.

Obviously purchases of the print book also come with the free PDF version.
September 18, 2025 at 12:09 AM
Our current plan is to release the full Convicts & Cthulhu core Rulebook on October 31. It is a 312-page book, and will be available as a hardcover print title for those that like physical books. It is approximately 3x the size of our earlier C&C setting book, expanded in literally every aspect.
September 11, 2025 at 7:50 AM
The Convicts & Cthulhu Quickstart is a 70pp book, complete with rules, Protagonists, and a full adventure. Right now it is available only as a PDF, but will be available in softcover print when the full Convicts & Cthulhu RPG launches on October 31.

It's been quite a while since we released any new products for Cthulhu Eternal ... mostly because there have been a few very BIG things we've been working on. The first output of those creative endeavours should drop soon ... the below is a bit of a teaser about what we will be unleashing.

If you're a Lovecraftian TTRPG aficionado (for any game system), you should really check out Shoggoth.net's awesome Octobernomicon event (which has run for years). Fan-contributed Mythos creations every day. A great way to give or get some new horrors.
