I managed to coerce Godot into components without throwing everything into the node tree -- by instead using Resources.

(Tip: Don't do this)

What I did: I set the Viewport resolution to something higher, but more common, 1920x1080, with stretch mode as canvas_items and Scale to 1.5 for my use-case.

Alternative: One thing I was experimenting with was changing the root content-scale at runtime with this, which is contained in an autoload:
