Charlotta Forss (Södertörn University) presents at the Climate and Environmental History Seminar 5 November. The Seminar is a collaboration with the Early Modern Seminar. Maps have played a central role in our understanding of what and where “the north” is. At the same time, the northernmost reaches of our world have, for much of history, been difficult to navigate and information hard to verify, and not least so due to harsh climatological and environmental conditions. This seminar explores how “the north” wasconceptualized in early modern maps, and takes this discussion as a starting point for considering the links between knowledge making, conceptualization and climate historically. Charlotta Forss is an Assistant Professor in History at Södertörn University. Her recent publications include the monograph Mapping the North: Myth, Exploration, Encounter (Bodleian Library Publishing, 2025). And now an interesting question from @jrrfitzgibbons.bsky.social on "noise" in terms of turbulence, picking up on Lyndal's argument that "It is living human beings who make history as they move." Lyndal reflecting also on the noise in Albert Dürer's coeval dream of a landscape in deluge (pictured).

Brilliant guide to dating a world map from @xkcd.com, though of depressingly limited use before 1805 😅
A decision tree titled "Guide to figuring out the age of an undated world map". It starts with the question "Istanbul or Constantinople?", which, after a few more questions, takes one to the result "1805 or earlier." The entire page is filled with more questions about city and country names and appearances, with various paths helping the reader date their map to, e.g., 1834-45 or 1958-60, with lots of other possible end results. At the bottom right, one of the questions asks "Are you sure this is a map?" and one of the follow-up questions is "Is it trying to bite me?" It could ultimately be a tuba, breadbox, cat, or seagull, among other things.

My question is: what is the knobbly object? It is not described in any of the image descriptions in Herzog August Bibliothek’s portrait collection. Or am I overthinking this, and is it just a sword hilt? Another sample image follows 😊

Hans-Joachim Kraschewski claims Julius is often portrayed more as a merchant or as a bourgeois entrepreneur than a prince, and in his #portraits he is often holding a pair of gloves in one hand and a knobbly object in the other.
