Yes I think people are looking backwards with their 2025 goggles on. Trump was a different candidate back then and his election was partly a fluke. We just don't like to say that things are unpredictable and chancy because what do you do with that, but it happens.

At some point, in order to justify the last valuation that they can't live up to, they have to just keep going all in to buy themselves more time. Then there's another bigger valuation to live up to. It's a cycle they're trapped in.

These people are like LLMs incarnate. They're hallucinating all over the place.

Incredible leap from "let's be objective about evaluating service outputs against costs" to "let's give away money to everyone who wants it." Your post perfectly encapsulates the very willful ignorance I'm warning against, so thanks for that.

People cannot get their shallowly interrogated morality out and just look at operational efficacy, amount of service provided and overall total cost of a program that would include monetary benefits of its outcomes. If you do, you see universal makes the most sense when providing a service.

I definitely want people to run on this. It's a material sign of reform. It appeals to progressives and conservatives. It works - see Vespasian's very successful politicking off of Nero's architectural excesses.

Who congratulates an assassinated President? These people are weird.

The first sentence to this piece is all time great. I'd already read the piece but just read that line again it's that good. The argument is great, but the craft is just as good. Thanks @jamellebouie.net

They can probably see that he's declining by the minute and won't have it in him to run.
December 17, 2025 at 8:28 PM
They're telling on themselves. They themselves think they're dicks and don't like it that you're making them remember that because it makes them uncomfortable.

Amazing to me that people continue not to understand this. It's been a decade. It's a failure to think they don't know. The same failure of imagination that leads to diner safaris and the idea that if only they heard their policy proposals they'd vote for the Dems. They've heard them too!

Public shaming against actions that go against our shared values of human decency is good!

And yet, culture is not a game with winners and losers. Pitting one culture against another is like pitting the sun against the moon. It's stupid.

Not all cultures are equal? Ok then let me have at Rep. Randy Fine's culture! I can guarantee I'll have plenty to say that might surprise him.

This is exactly the kind of narrow thinking that a broad education is meant to help you avoid.

Once you get in the groove though, it's addictive. I had a ton of trouble coming from souls games because you can't play them the same way. Once you get how Sekiro wants you to play, it's fun.

We can't let people who know nothing about history and/or who are intent to completely distort it to be the ones talking loudest about it!

Migration and civilization have always been intertwined. It was key to the Roman empire, there were Vikings serving the Byzantine emperor, there was the settling of England first by the Romans then by the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, etc. Then of course, there is America.

What a sense of style he had, everything perfect all the way down to the perfect sized drink in his hand.

Well said. If we do not punish the perpetrators of war crimes, we are all dishonored. I really need the leaders of this country to do what needs to be done here on my and the rest of the country's behalf.

Kpop Demon Hunters is good. It's very charming - I'm glad my kids introduced me to it. Be warned though - the songs will get stuck in your head.

My thoughts exactly. The clone wars series gets very good by the final seasons.
December 1, 2025 at 7:40 PM
To be fair, I had a good impression of Rogue One then I rewatched it. Maybe it's the contrast with Andor, but it's a mediocre movie. People want Star Wars movies to be good and they are overwhelmingly mediocre to not good. We want the movies to be better than they are.

I hope this is just very poorly done sarcasm Matt

The NYT strips itself of its own relevance on a daily basis. Eventually it will winnow itself down to a little rump of its former power. It will still be something, who knows what, but it will be made a smaller much less consequential something entirely of its own doing.
