Aurora pulled out her phone and called the bar. “You’ve got the Gutterlight, where home is just a slip away,” a warmly familiar voice said. Aurora smiled and said, “Hey Sam.” “Oh shit, you’re home?” Exclaimed Sam. “Yeah, I just walked in, and don’t ask. It sucked exactly like we thought it would,” Aurora sighed. “Yeah…” Sam ventured. “Yeah,” Aurora sighed, then followed with, “things sound lively, good night?” Sam paused and then said, “Sure, it’s not bad for a Sunday. But… Nyxy, you sound… Are you okay?” “Heh, they tried their best. But fuck that and fuck them! I’m not giving them the satisfaction.” With some hesitation, Sam continued, “I know Nyxy. I know. But that doesn’t really answer the question.” “I’m good, hun. Seriously, I’m as good as I can be, considering everything. I got to say goodbye on my own terms. I even got the chance to tell a couple of them to go fuck themselves. That part was just for me.” The world quivered—then squirmed. Not an earthquake. No rumble, no sound. Just a wave of air, like existence itself had been shoved sideways and then released. Aurora didn’t move. She just sat there—vacant, mouth slightly open, mid-thought. Whatever she’d been about to feel, or say, or be, got lost in that squirming sigh of the universe. The only sounds were the hum of the fridge and the distant music from the bar, still playing over the phone. Sam was not speaking either. The newscast looked like it was on pause. Even the lights seemed to hold their breath.
