The government "shutdown" stopped or threatened to stop services such as public parks, air traffic control and even food assistance to poor people, but it did nothing to slow down its international killing operations in Palestine, Venezuela, Somalia and elsewhere.

However, in our time of hyper-violence & uber-militarism, merely declaring that peace is important is nearly a revolutionary act. Rotary International has adopted peace & conflict resolution as one of its 7 areas of focus and uses peace poles as symbols of this effort. www.rotary.org/en/our-cause...
