How did our present-day early care and education system take shape? Public kindergarten, day nurseries, Head Start, and tax credits did not appear overnight; each emerged from struggles over whose children deserved public support and who would do the care work.

"My son Eli came to me through Oklahoma’s foster care system. He was born w/ a congenital heart defect that required 3 open-heart surgeries before kindergarten. He’s also neurodiverse and needs support from multiple specialists....love alone doesn’t meet medical needs or cover therapy bills."
