I’m very honored to have a piece in Chronologie, a lovely #neuvithesley / #neuviwrio zine!

I wrote about Neuvillette & Wriothesley going to the Inazuma-style hot springs in the Serenitea Pot while navigating their increasing closeness.

Case 3: the Prophecy & the Wingalet

Wriothesley realizes that the prophesy that Fontaine will flood & everyone will die is coming to pass.

Instead of running away or figuring out how to protect himself, Wrio commits to building an ark with which to save as many ppl as possible. 🧵
Excerpt from Wriothesley’s Character Story: “Throughout his as-yet unfinished life, Wriothesley has always seemed to be preparing for something. No matter what, he does not wish for people to be ruled by terror. And once the personal element of fear has been removed, what remains is something more akin to a sense of danger. He would like to make some preparations in response to the crisis, even if it might prove futile in the end.” Excerpt from Wriothesley’s Character Story: “History is, after all, vast and terrible, and humanity is no more than seashells to be smashed upon the seashore by its great waves. Thus, he began to prepare for the creation of the Wingalet, expending vast resources and employing much manpower, though he did not put more stock into its success. It was a ship designed for fleeing disaster - an insurmountable chasm lay between it and golden Fortuna, bringer of civilization and glory. (IMHO, Wrio did not entirely anticipate that with old Administrator fleeing, the power vacuum would have to be filled by someone Wriothesley trusted to do the job.

(The only person Wrio trusts to do the job is himself.))

Case 2: Fortress of Meropide

The FOM is ‘a lawless place’ when Wriothesley gets there, where everyone is struggling to simply scrape by and survive.

Wrio is not content to serve his time & escape, or to personally thrive:

he decides he has to improve the FOM for himself & everyone else 🧵
Excerpt from Wriothesley’s character story: “Hurling lawbreakers into a lawless chaos to fend for themselves was indeed one way of doing things, but Wriothesley could not approve of it. He was perfectly willing to adapt to his environment, but if the environment was not suited for survival in the first place, then he certainly wasn't going to take this lying down.” Excerpt from Wriothesley’s character story: “As such, he challenged the Fortress' previous administrator to a duel, in the name of fairness, justice, and order. Of course, their respective standings made poor grounds for this fight even at the best of times, but on that day, not a soul, inmate or guard, said a word in protest.”

Case 1: Wriothesley’s parents

He personally escapes their grasp … and immediately starts plotting their murder so they can be permanently stopped.
Excerpt from Wriothesley’s character story: “Wriothesley's mechanical gauntlets have gone through a great many iterations. Their origin can be traced back to his escape from his foster home. Given his age and constitution then, it was impossible for him to deal with a single adult, let alone more. As such, he was forced to try his luck on the streets, picking up odd jobs and doing apprenticeships, learning the art of lockpicking and the creation of small gadgets. He wanted to make sure that he would be well-equipped when he finally returned to destroy that accursed place. He fashioned a wrist-mounted device that could launch iron nails at high speed, penetrating any sufficiently soft surface. Unfortunately, it had limited uses, and lost all ability to function after a battle, just like him - and unlike him, it could not be saved.”

Based on his character story, I definitely got the impression that he didn’t quite comprehend the weight of snuffing out two lives until after he did it

That weight drove him to confess so he could pay for his crime and start ‘fresh’

& honestly that’s so human of him ❤️😭

Tl;dr: it’s just not a very long leap to ‘wrio’s foster parents sexually assaulted the foster kids in their care, just like the clients they sell the kids to’.

Especially since they can remorselessly murder children on the regular. Like. Maybe even right in their own home. 🧵

As to reading between the lines to arrive at ‘active CSA seems likely’:

1) as detailed above, there’s pretty strong evidence of other kinds of abuse a la the Beret Society: emotional, mental

2) ‘lied to satiate their desires’ - WHAT desires?

We never hear WHY Wrio’s parents do this. 🧵

My point is: there’s a number of indicators that Wrio’s foster parents were, in fact, abusive.

Wriothesley says he wishes he could have had ‘a peaceful and happy childhood’ — looking back, he doesn’t see his childhood as peaceful *or* happy, despite how he saw it as a kid.

Wriothesley describes his parents as ‘perfect—or so he thought’
And he and his only friends - his foster siblings - all considered themselves ‘lucky’.

I think this describes how most members of the Beret Society felt. Even at the worst, it’s better ‘inside’ than ‘outside’. 🧵

At the end of his SQ, Wrio tells us about his childhood.

He says it’s ‘similar’ to the experiences of the members of the Beret Society - a cult where the members are controlled by terror, while being gaslighted into thinking they’re both happier & safer in the cult. 🧵

Even if Wriothesley wasn’t actively assaulted, he was certainly groomed from a young age for CSA as the ward of child traffickers—which is itself an act of sexual abuse.

However, I think you can read between the lines that Wrio & his siblings were being SA’d by their foster parents. 🧵

here: have a couple paragraphs from a work about Wriothesley taking over the FOM.

It’s a ‘quote’ from an interview with a Garde who was present for the events leading up to Wrio challenging the old Administrator to a duel.
“From what I understand, Administrator Wriothesley has always been the kind of guy who’s willing to put his life on the line for justice. I heard somewhere that he almost died committing the murders he got sent to Meropide for in the first place. Well, he put his life on the line for justice in the Fortress of Meropide, too. I can’t even call it bullheaded nonsense, which is usually how I feel about that kind of thing. It’s obvious to me, at least, that when that guy gambles with his life, it’s always a calculated risk.”

Just bc Wriothesley thought of himself as ‘lucky’ when he was a child doesn’t mean he wasn’t being abused. It doesn’t mean he wasn’t terrified every day.

He was ‘lucky’ to not live on the streets. He was ‘lucky’ to have parents who ‘loved’ him.
