The Loft
Your door shines like gold
Creation Records, 1985

From the 12” single of Up the hill and down the slope.

Another one of Pete Astor’s great songs. He’s extremely talented.

The Fall (have you heard of them?)

He Pep!

From the Light User Syndrome LP, released in 1996.

I’m not crazy about the song but I like to randomly shout You pep!

UK Subs
She's not there

A single from 1979. The only UK Subs item in my record collection.

90 seconds of pure energy and I love it.

Congratulations to Scotland. That was an incredible last few minutes!

I’m staying in a hotel in Exeter tonight.

Well, it bills itself as a hotel but, to be honest, a more accurate description would be “a collection of sheds just off the A38”.

Glamorous, it is not.

Told a work colleague that I’d left a work WhatsApp group a few days ago, because it was no longer relevant to me, and she said that she’d noticed but thought I was just having a tantrum.

The Clash
White man in Hammersmith Palais

A single from 1978

Took me a few years to really understand this song but it was definitely worth the wait!

Turning rebellion into money.

The Fall

Reckoning

From Middle Class Revolt, 1994

One of those songs which passed me by at the time, but which has really grown on me down the years.

You’re sleeping with some hippy half-wit who thinks he’s Mr Mark Smith!

Back up north we go to Manchester to meet New Order and those pretentious miserable fuckers at Factory Records.

Everything’s gone green, which IN MY OPINION was the b-side of Procession.

Does anybody really pay £34.99 for a blue vinyl copy of the Buckingham Nicks album from several decades ago?

That’s at least £10 more than I’m prepared to pay.

Every LinkedIn notification starts with the phrase “you may be interested in”, and I am never interested in hearing what some egotistical prick has got to say about their latest tedious career move.

So you’ve got a fabulous new job, more money and great colleagues? Good. Keep it to yourself.

We go down the M6 to the Midlands, to meet Dexys Midnight Runners.

The b side to Liars A to E, the 1981 7” which attacked the music press, was this fabulous instrumental with an equally fantastic title.

Eurythmics
Thorn in my side

I’m not a big Eurythmics fan but I have a very specific and happy memory associated with this song, which means I’ll always think very fondly of it.

The Fall
Extricate

Title track of the 1990 album, the first one not to feature Brix since 1982’s Room to Live. Also saw the return of Martin Bramah, but solely for this album.

It’s quite a strange, confused and confusing album. Not one of my favourites, to be honest.

The best group EVER to come out of my home city of Bristol. Massive Attack & Portishead are good, but they cannot hold a candle to the Blue Aeroplanes.

The Brilliant Corners were just shite.

Control of Embassies, from the debut album Bop Art, released 1983/84.

England’s nightmare scenario is an injury to Harry Kane which keeps him out of the World Cup. He’s on a completely different level to every other English goalscorer! #football

Looking forward to watching England play away in Albania later this afternoon. Hope England can go through the entire qualifying campaign without conceding a goal!

I remember when England played in Albania in 1989, it was VERY different. Albania was still closed-off at the time.
