If it bites you, it’s venomous. If you bite it, it’s poisonous

A good meal can go a long way!

Given crocs are ectothermic, they don’t need to eat everyday. And if they take down large prey, they can be satisfied for up to 3 weeks. Even in the wild they can go months without food as long as they have good fat reserves.

Crocs don’t chew, so they use other means to tenderize and tear their food

Auggie used to be terrified of people given the abuse he received for tourist photos. Now, he is confident&has a sense of security.

Don’t forget, Mondays at 730pmCST I’ll be going live on Instagram to talk croc & anything else about the scientific world!

This croc was attacking dogs given its relatively easy prey for its poor eyesight. But the croc isn’t the problem, people are. Water pollution is causing eyesight issues & people feeding the croc created a perfect storm of conflict.

Crocodylians are unique relative to other animals as they have a 4 chambered that can convert to a 3 chambered heart. And that my friends, is some cool and #weirdscience

Yes, crocs have thick skin but certain leech species have evolved to be able to penetrate.

Gilly is a croc ambassador @crocresearchcoal.bsky.social who teaches about empathy towards all wildlife. His eyes were poked out and he was living on ice so he could be docile for tourist photos. Thanks to a wildlife champion for saving him, he now steals heart with his smile and story

Crocs are semi-aquatic predators, but some species are a bit more terrestrial than others, like Morelet’s crocodiles.

My daughter&a young student of mine assisted in a necropsy. We found a prey species in this croc that has NEVER been documented in ANY crocodilian species. So a 10yr old&a 13yr old will be contributing to a publication! Pretty cool mom&daughter will get to publish together!

Auggie was used illegally for wildlife tourism. People poked out his eyes&kept him on ice to be docile for tourist photos. No animal should suffer such cruelty, even those we find “dangerous.” Animals are sentient beings&deserve respect. Auggie now has a 2nd chance @crocresearchcoal.bsky.social

“What’s one of the most unforgettable moments in field research for you?”
Answer: Getting vomited on by a 10ft crocodile exorcist style, and then having your research assistant pick parasites off of you.

Halloween came a day early for me 👻

Yesterday along w/my daughter, a young student, &an old CRC student , we conducted a necropsy on a 4ft American #croc that got hit by a vehicle. What we found in its stomach has never been documented prey in any crocodilian species before!
