Here's my first venture into layering copper and nickel between layers of leftover canister Damascus. I'm taking lots of pictures now in case it delaminates when I try to bend it into a bracelet, but it seems to be holding together well so far.

There's actually a bike trail under there, where you can watch as nature tries to reassert its power over our puny works.

According to the last couple of paragraphs, they're not all being asked back. It's another "it's 100% tariffs, no now it's only 20%, doesn't that make us seem more reasonable since it's not 100%?" move. Classic abuser.

How it started/how it's going.

The plates from the broken-apart links of several bicycle chains, plus powder (steel w/nickel). Hoping to use as the outside layers of a sanmai with a thin shim of copper in between, aka "CuMai". First time trying that, could well end in tears and/or a puddle of melted copper.

The good news is that using a stainless steel canister keeps it from welding itself to the billet inside. But that's doesn't mean it's _easy_ to get them separated.

Loaded and forge-welded my second ever canister of Damascus this week. Cycling theme continues.

I've seen (and made) some canister Damascus using bike chains, but not so much the sprockets from the gear sets. Hoping to give it a go in the next few weeks. (Plan for the actual cutting edge to be layered 1084/15N20; this would be decorative on the outside.)

I guess I see why people post videos of these, since the magic is in how the light plays over the pattern as you move.

Finally finished this up (other than the sharpening). Bicycle chain/1090 canister Damascus, 1095 cutting blade, walnut handle. Plenty of mistakes to learn from, but feels like a good start.

@tmbg.bsky.social I found this in Dallas, maybe a Factory Showroom fan out there?

Sure, here's the other side.

Looking pretty after the etch and rinse (before drying and waxing)

"A coffee can full of Euros" is beating the S&P 500 pretty soundly for the month.

When you go to visit them, plan to bring beach clothes because the beaches on Rottnest Island are absolutely gorgeous.

I dunno, when I saw the quokkas they were almost as big as a car! (If you held the camera just right and forced perspective.)

It gets even weirder when you split by gender and age. All men, and genX women. (Source: navigatorresearch.org/2024-post-el...)

Further progress on the bicycle-chain canister Damascus. Not heat-treated yet, so it'll get another etch, but I was eager to get a look at how the pattern was coming out.

Slow to follow up, but here's the first test etch of the bicycle-chain canister Damascus from last week, and a progress photo directly after forge-welding in a piece of 1095 for a cutting edge.

My first attempt at canister Damascus (bicycle chain and 1090 steel powder) is in progress. So far, so good.

I've been taking blacksmithing classes for a couple of years, and I still have plenty to learn, and focus a lot on the things I could have done better. But I think past-me would be kind of impressed by what present-me can do now.

Chipmunk assessing whether I'm a danger or if I'm the kind of person who would eat something clumsily enough to drop a treat. (Neither one, today).

Um, did they really, really, really bury the lede here? Or did someone skip a "not" in this sentence?

I mean, maybe Jerome Corsi was BSing about it, but the Mueller report has him saying he and Roger Stone talked about getting WikiLeaks to dump stuff ASAP when they heard the Access Hollywood tape was coming out.
