Alternatively, you can use a metal jar lid and poke some small holes on it, use it as a sandpaper. I found this to be even more effective sometimes

It looks great! I must say it seems like 80% of the work is already done. Great job! You might consider using something like sandpaper to smooth the surface; it would be very helpful
