writing designing programming games. she/her. living on stolen land in naarm, sovereignty was never ceded.
designs like Fantasy Strike end up being games that are so Mechanics that all of the Effects has been sucked out. there is no wobbliness or give, everything has been Designed to try to evoke a particular experience (yomi) that has been enjoyed in titles. tldr modern fighting games need Hemi Jack

i found myself reaching for the term 'effect' from foddy's discover the world comment: sylvie.itch.io/discover-the...

the 'classics' like accent core, melee, MVC2 felt very much designed for 'effects' rather than 'mechanics'. then once more vocabulary formed, mechanics became the big focus.

apologies for the absolutely nuclear necro here, but this thread gave me a toolkit for why i have so many modern fighting game feels like this as well! all the canned RPS situations, highly thought-out moves that all have Some Purpose... they go against the wobbliness! theyre grind designed as grind

a central principle—maybe THE central principle—in each of these is: sometimes you won't understand what the weird little guys do, and they'll do it for a machine-reason that you can only feel the edges of. but you will enjoy it when they do it

obviously, the way you've presented it is coloured by your way of presenting narratives, but every time i think of this i am aghast at how much it just reads like a bit you would post. im almost compelled to purchase the game to assess the veracity of your presentation. unbelievable stuff

other goals are to write more and do more rumination and writing when i work on my games. for a person with 'lots of thoughts' i do shockingly little writing them down and drawing them out.

(godot voice) You know this function call is great and all but have you considered it would be way cooler if it had an extra like four lines and it was also an object. oh you don't want to make an object? that's ok we expose the lowest level version of the API. it's the same amount of lines
