Or perhaps you're thinking all of these thoughts, briefly, just tiptoeing through your brain one moment, gone the next, fleeting like the night you're caught in?

Most importantly, you think, I should sleep.

But don't you know the easiest way to sleep?

Don't think.

Do you think about how little connection there is between all those people, living so close to each other between thin walls and yet, might never offer a hello, or even just a simple smile?

Do you think about other people in your city or even someplace far away and wonder just how many are restless, too, struggling to submerge in oblivious dreams?

Do you think about the past day, all you did or didn't do or rather about what comes next, what's left to do and what you tell yourself you'll finish this time, determination always stronger during the night than when you're awake?

Do you think about the small body of your cat, already fast asleep, softly snoring beside you and most likely the first to tear you from a short slumber that never comes early enough and never leaves enough time to fully rest?

Do you think about the heat that isn't quite warm enough to fully cast away your blanket but still unpleasant enough to keep you up at 3am?

Do you think about the city lights sneaking past your blinds and wonder if you'll still be awake to hear the birds rise in an attempt to sing you a lullaby?

"3am Thoughts"

And as you lie in bed, draped over the sheets like a starfish, the duvet covering only parts of your body, what do you think of while staring at the ceiling in the dark?

Bright phone screen
Tired eyes flitting across the words
A story that quietens your mind

Only for thoughts to rush back
Once the last page turns and
The story ends

Everything feels off
The room
Yourself

The light flickers out
Blanket pulled closer
Eyes wide open

(As dark as everything's still

This poem or whatever it is is called (very fittingly) "Insomnia"

As dark as everything's still
Pillow too soft
Mattress too hard

Restlessness deep in your stomach
Thoughts racing
They don't ever settle

Lips dry
Nose cold
One sock on, one sock off
