I question the use of mandatory civil service except as an opt-out of the military on conscientious grounds. Civil service doesn't have the same strategic necessity as the military, and the fact that it's mandatory implies the state is just finding labour at sub-market prices.

When I finally read Kaczynski's manifesto I was shocked about how it basically promoted social darwinism. Its popularity in leftist circles is quite startling.

Also, the authors conclude, "Thus, when it comes to individual lifestyle behaviors, we recommend that practitioners and scholars prioritize these actions [fewer dogs and low-carbon meats] when developing interventions in the United States." So they endorse promoting these lifestyle changes.

Depends on what you call "utterly negligible". Checking citation 2, "no pets" (the closest figure I find to "one less dog") mitigates ~1 ton of CO2-equivalent per person. That's about an 11 hour-long plane flight.

Probably because the authors of whatever paper this figure is from wanted to have a timespan as broad as possible, but reliable. Maybe it has the figure for a more restricted timeframe too.

William Spaniel has a video that specifically addresses the question in relation to Ukraine, 3 years ago: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JR8... Specifically he cites 64% of limited military conflicts ending in negotiated settlements since Napoleon.

Repeating my comment here--it's not just that Ukraine didn't have the button; the nuclear sites on its ground were fully controlled and guarded by Russians. The only way to kept a hold of them would have been through force.

Sadly my question went unanswered so I'll elaborate a little and hope for a quick response anyway. With Ukraine, you proposed that conflict arose due to the end of the Sevastopol navy deal. With Gaza, Hamas was afraid of Israeli diplomatic normalization. Is there something like that with Kashmir?

In game theory we assume the participants to be rational actors. With the group chat leak giving us a peek into the mindsets of key figures of the Trump administration, how would you assess that assumption?

When Trump was just elected, you suggested he might flood Ukraine with weapons to force Russia to the negotiating table. Does that still seem likely given he didn't do that already?
