Nope I'm wrong when I said Cooper's Hawks mate "dozens of times," I'm misremembering the literature. They mate much more often than that, with this paper estimating each pair mates 372 times in 30 days! And it's typically super noisy.

Warbler season is coming! 2020 was a weird year for lots of reasons, but that year my yard(!) was brimming with these colorful migrants. Hasn't been the same since then, but it made for a nice treat that year.

Amidst all the horrors of the threatened funding freeze (not even counting all the other horrors) the possible loss of Conservation Reserve Program funding (for grassland preservation) isn’t the most important story.
