This is probably my last big piece for the year. Probably. Sometimes inspiration strikes and there's nothing you can do but my current plans are to spend the holidays relaxing, finishing Dragon Age and doing some freelance. I hope everyone had a productive year.

Now, the industry standard is the suite of software by Toonboom. Toonboom was founded in 1994 and in 1996 they released Opus, their first animation software. This software has evolved over the years into what it is today, Toonboom Harmony.

Not long after this, Flash becomes widely used for television animation, holding a place as the industry standard for TV computer animation for many years. Sites like Newgrounds become playgrounds for young animators and game designers, experimenting with the program.

In 1997, John Kricfalusi (yuck, i know) creates the first cartoon exclusively for the internet, The Goddamn George Liquor Program. This is widely considered the first prominent use of Adobe Flash as animation software.

In 1995, Pixar works with Disney to create Toy Story, their first feature length film. Though Pixar had been experimenting with 3D computer animation since the 80s, Toy Story is the first feature length 3d animated film.

In 1990, Disney releases The Rescuers Downunder, it's first traditionally animated film created using nothing but CAPS.

Now we rewind a bit. 1986. Disney makes its first big experiment with computer animation. For The Great Mouse Detective, computers were used to animated the final set piece inside the turning gears of Big Ben.

Disney used the multiplane camera for 50 years. That's how solid an invention it was. They had hit a ceiling and needed to wait for new technology to come along. The last movie Disney used the multiplane camera for was The Little Mermaid in 1989.

Walt knew it could be better. Wanting to show depth and realism in his cartoons, Walt employs technician William Garity to create the multiplane camera in the late 1930s.
This lets animators physically distance the elements of their scenes to create real depth in scenes.
