The afternoon sun was putting in a shift, trying its best to warm the stones of the Pont Neuf bridge as it filtered through a Parisian haze so soft it felt government-mandated. Lucy Douglas leaned against the parapet, but the famous view hit her like a sleeping pill. This wasn't a city, she thought, it was a theme park for adults with good credit scores. Disneyland for people who pretend to read Proust. Tourists looked at the curated beauty and saw art. She looked at it and saw the bars of a very pretty cage. The problem wasn't the view, it was that after a week it had become nothing more than the world's most expensive wallpaper.
