Yep. When I was stupid enough to use the "live chat" function of a domestic abuse charity, it told me confidently that being abused because you're disabled isn't abuse, then ordered me to get off the chat.

Which is why I loathe Google’s “AI overview” nonsense. I often Google scientific or legal topics, and the AI often contains errors that even I —well-versed in those areas but indisputably a layman — can readily spot.

And for this, we are killing the planet and nuking people’s electricity bills.

When AI chatbots make things up, this should be called confabulating. Apparently techies call it “hallucinating,” but that’s not what the AI is doing. It’s taking patterns of words and making up a “fact” or story, as someone with dementia would. That’s confabulation.

Also saw an example last year where google's AI insisted water below freezing was not frozen because it had not reached freezing point yet :) it had statistically remixed the descriptions of boiling and freezing; LLM working as intended, result, nonsense.

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.
