Problem is: in days past it was possible to deter voters from picking some parties thanks to racism being beyond the pale for polite society.

I'm not sure that holds as strongly any more.

Put those two things together and you've got a really hideous cocktail.

Agree that most people won't give a stuff about what he said as a kid.

I worry about focusing primarily on policy, though. I'm not convinced voters' decisions are that affected by policy specifics, especially for a choice that currently seems to be based on a 'sod 'em all' attitude.

I’m more sympathetic to this interpretation of the value of collective worship. Problem is it’s hard to have this kind of activity without a shared belief.

One counterpoint is classical religion, which managed that collective action without that much interference in individuals’ lives
