You know, you COULD call up our troops to defend us FROM the bunch of rampaging thugs that are assaulting people in the streets for no reason.

Relatedly: I COULD still be convinced to vote for you in the next governor's election.

This is assault.

Yeah....

When it's all said and done, he's just a Democrat after all.

The next 48 hours are going to define his governorship. He has a choice to

A) Stand with the people of Illinois and pick a MASSIVE fight with Trump and/or the police

B) roll over for them and hope to try and spin his capitulation as something positive.

Typical Democrat would choose B)

BIG facts.

That still means that for all his tough guy rhetoric, the real question is: will he actually step up to that fight, or will he cave and bow down to the fascists like all the rest?

Probably because he knows that if he ordered state troopers to arrest ICE and clear them out, they would likely refuse, and if he pressed the issue, they'd launch a coup.

American police are their own political party. They don't answer to anyone or anything outside their own chain of command.

I actually DID have "Israel launches actual terrorist attacks in neutral countries" on my bingo card but I'm still a little bit surprised it finally came to this.

Only because the finished product is itself a complex system. But that's equally true of a sufficiently complex videogame.

Just because you don't understand what's causing all the memory leaks in Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't mean one of the characters has become sentient and is trying to escape the game.

Alt: I mean, they MIGHT be, but your lack of understanding of how the software works isn't proof of that.

Sure, but only in the sense that MOST software applications are incredibly complex systems and unexpected behavior can emerge from causes that are poorly understood.

That is, and I mean this completely literally, a BUG, not a FEATURE.
October 4, 2025 at 2:47 AM
And OP is simply wrong. The behavior of cellular automata is, fundamentally, a mathematical function. We understand everything ABOUT those functions and the underlying logic.

"If don't understand how it works, then no one else could either. It must be magic."

Replicating a complex process requires understanding how it works on all levels.

The only reason you doubt this is because you've never tried to DO it and you don't understand how many MILLIONS of times your whole simulation would fall apart because of some minute detail you overlooked.
October 4, 2025 at 2:36 AM
I mean they don't even TRY to make a prediction more than about 10 days out, and they're still wrong half the time.
October 4, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Put another way: you cannot predict the evolution of a weather pattern 6 months out. You CAN feed 50 years of weather reports into a generative AI and have it make a statistically believable spread pf weather reports for the next 6 months.

It might even guess right 60% of the time.
October 4, 2025 at 2:22 AM
If you don't even understand the PARTS of a complex system, replicating the whole is out of the question entirely.

The best you can do is simulate its behavior without replicating ANY of the underlying interactions that bring that behavior about.

And that's what LLMs are.
October 4, 2025 at 2:19 AM
But you can't implement the underlying mechanisms unless you understand HOW THEY WORK. This is the exact reason why predicting the weather is hard: because we don't have good model for turbulent flow, and probably never will, and cannot accurately predict how weather systems work on long scales.

At 11:30pm on my 6th birthday when I decided I was going to have to figure out on my own how to make Teddy Ruxpin shut the hell up.

After beating the stupid thing to death with a Ninja Turtle action figure I thought "There's GOT to be a better way to do this..."

I've been working in IT ever since.
