One of the biggest things I adore about Octopath as a series is that it tells its stories sincere and earnest, like it's just not afraid to be a good ol JRPG, even if some of its stories feel familiar

He does, a fair bit actually! Been thinking of dripfeeding out some lore on him over time, happy to answer questions.
The church thing, it's 'mostly' a joke. Much as the big oaf tries, he doesn't blend in too well. So sometimes he likes to lean into his monstrous reputation, for better or worse.
