The Center for Research-Action on Race Relations is a Montreal-based independent, non-profit civil rights organization founded in 1983.

Last week, CRARR held a meeting with City Councillor Leslie Roberts and residents from the Manoir-Charles Dutaud, a downton seniors' home run by the Montreal Housing Authority, to discuss solutions to ongoing problems of lax security, ineffective surveillance and lack of protection of seniors.

Last Sunday, CRARR was invited to the Chan Family Association's Christmas Dinner. Association Chair Jimmy Chan welcomed special guests such as Montreal Executive Committee Chairman Claude Pinard and Member in charge of public security, Mayor Jim Beis. More than 350 guests attended the event.

Quatre associations du Quartier chinois s’opposent au projet de logement pour personnes itinérantes sur la rue Côté. Elles dénoncent l’absence de consultation et craignent pour la sécurité, le patrimoine et la vitalité du quartier. Des actions sont prévues en novembre.

Recently, CRARR lent support to residents and merchants of the Devonshire area who filed a class action lawsuit against Quebec health and city authorities and two nonprofits serving the unhoused for major damages to their property, safety and civil rights. Alexandra and Éric are behind the lawsuit.

Niemi said the situation is similar in Chinatown, where residents are also preparing a legal action. “These are small businesses and merchants we’re talking about. They can’t afford to replace windows and doors every week or every month. They work practically seven days a week to make ends meet.”
