Incredible walk today, a lot of patience yielded some great views of great blue heron, goldfinches, and cedar waxwing adult with juvenile! #birds #ORbirds
A great blue heron wades in a pond. The body is large and the neck is curved in an S shape as the bird looks ahead. A great blue heron as it darts its head towards the water to grab something. #birds #ORbirds Saw several of these ( I think American Goldfinch??) happily flying around the community garden. This one is perched on a giant sunflower stalk.

From the neighborhood yesterday - got a sleepy starling, serene gadwalls (I think), a mystery bird and a mystery mammal that I think is another nutria but smaller than the other one I've seen. #birds #ORbirds
Mother mallard and five ducklings with a furry mammal swimming by. At first from the smaller size I thought muskrat, because the other nutria I've seen around is way more massive, but the ears are pretty big which suggests nutria. A bird seen from the back behind some branches. The bird's wings are mostly light orange streaked with black. The head appears to be gray with two brown stripes on either side. Based on the head this seems most likely a house sparrow but I don't think I've seen one this color before? Two ducks float close together, facing each other, on still water that appears green. I think they are gadwalls - they are a light buff and brown color. A close up side view of a small bird, mostly black with white dots throughout. Its feathers are puffed out giving it a rounded fluffy appearance.

Also saw so many amazing plants and flowers. The yellow pond lily I think has a big caterpillar inside of it?? Also a Nootka rose, western sword fern and something with a honeybee on it.
Yellow pond lily: this flower has six large, orangey-yellow petals curving upwards around a yellow stamen. Something is inside the flower - possible a big fat caterpillar? Nootka rose: a small pink flower with a yellow center grows from a stem with a lot of green leaves A fern with several fronds pointing up. The fronds have skinny leaves sticking out of the side and the leaves are curled into circles. A bee sits on a green leaf with its head sticking in to a small white blossom.

Saw a great mixture of birds and other animals at the park. Brown creeper, house sparrow, some kind of bunny, and what I think is a Douglas squirrel. #birds #ORbirds #squirrel

We also saw a bonus nutria. It was so big I thought at first it was a beaver, but when it got out of the water you could clearly see its long skinny tail.

The tail appears to be about the same length as the rest of the nutria's body and it's round and skinny, like a rat.

Just before sunset was a great time to spot many birds tonight. The first batch of ducklings is going strong and getting bigger, and there is another new batch too! #birds #ORbirds

Saw some sandpipers today, first time noticing them! I think they are Least Sandpipers. I love living near a wetland/marshy area so much. #birds #ORbirds

Also on today’s walk, discovered who has been hammering inside this tree for weeks! A pair of northern flickers! I love the heart-shaped markings on the one’s tail. #birds #ORbirds

The tail is mostly dark feathers but about halfway down, there is a pattern that looks like two hearts traced in white, next to each other. The bird is looking to the left , he has a prominent long beak and the red marking on the side of his throat is visible. This bird does not have the red markings on its throat so is probably a female.

A crocheted snake with colorful stripes. The circumference is similar to a banana. The same crocheted snake but instead of stretching out in a semicircle, it is fashioned into a loop so that the snakes head rests on top of a portion of its body.
