Laughing even when it hurts. Geopolitical satire and cartoon commentary will sharpen our awareness like little else. @zezvaz.bsky.social's Tiananmen Man Stopping Tesla Cybertruck Tanks deserves to go viral (maybe it has, and I am late to the party!).

On Flag Day, Alex Himelfarb distills the stakes for the US and for Canada—and indeed the world beyond whose democracies will be polluted by what Trump and an oligarch gang are doing. The attached passage goes to the heart of what this moment demands of us.

The “Come From Away” cast on stage for Flag Day in Toronto, singing opening piece from their musical, which narrates and celebrates how the people of Gander, Newfoundland, took in planeload after planeload on 9/11. Just a small reminder to our American cousins what being good neighbours means.

I’ve done a post that is, broadly speaking, about the global moment we are in, connecting Canada’s situation with Trump/the US to the #ManifestDestiny plans #Trump and #Netanyahu have for #Gaza. It is on Substack (no account needed to read) here:

Ditch complacency. Stay awake. Tell Trump to ‘Manifest this!’ and show the fierce resolve of Canadians to choose their own destiny. Pledge for Canada. We are 1500 shy of 50,000. Let’s hit that amazing landmark and push on to the next peak. #canadapledge engagement-canada-pledge.ca

Don’t for a moment think Trump has gone away. Threats, chaos, pulling back with a ‘win’, this could well be a pattern. But there will also be path-dependent pathways that he later will go down once he sees what divisions he has created and can exploit. engagement-canada-pledge.ca #canadapledge

25,000 Canadians have already signed the Pledge for Canada #CanadaPledge. Trump must be faced with Canadians’ fierce resolve and support for our governments coming together to respond fiercely not just to immediate tariff coercion but to Trump’s annexation fantasies.

Forget the swamp metaphor that the US right has exploited for so long from the Tea Party to Gingrich to Trump. What we are on the cusp of for Trump’s D.C. and America will be like a sewer. The US is on track for an age of out-in-the-open, gaslit business<>state corruption. See 2nd NYT extract:

Trump releases $Trump coin weekend b4 back in office. He + his family are shameless grifters who will milk the recaptured presidency for creation of personal wealth: see extract 1 from this NYT report on how Trump ties his political win to driving billions his way. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/19/u...

These last two paragraphs from Brooks are bang on, and are as relevant to Canada as to the US.

Starting w/ post-genocide guilt of the world after President Paul Kagame took the reins of Rwanda, countries like UK, France and US —and Canada by silence —have colluded w/ the authoritarian and war-mongering Kagame for his 40 years in power (w/ 10 more locked in). Quite sickening geopolitical evil.
