Or worse yet, Canton Avenue in Beechview!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_...

That hill is part of the yearly Dirty Dozen bicycle race in Pittsburgh.
A 50 mile race over the 13 steepest streets in Pittsburgh.

Audi did a commercial there years ago.

Yes this is a bit long, and might be a bit purple prose. Sorry for that if it is either or both

Hopefully it was at least a bit entertaining.

( ** ) Infinite meta for the win!

( * ) All I can suggest is reading more Pratchett** to understand. Or look at the archaic.

Thus comprehension and naming a thing grants power. The ability to do a simple action, as simple in fact as swiping my finger across a screen, or turning a page.

And I have continued reading....

So there you have it, make of it what you will.
(Told you it was going to ramble around a bit!)

One of the descriptions is dead on: "It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling."

Amazingly, I stumble across something that is so clear and simple and descriptive I am as if the dawn light is on my face. From Portuguese and Galician, floating in my browser tab, as I read the definition understanding wells up.

Saudade.

at lunch I search for a term to describe this state of mind and emotion. I expected to find a German word (Weltschmerz, great word, but weary is not right), or maybe a French term (Ennui, back to melancholy, still not quite there). Thankfully the Romance Languages have not let me falter in the dark.

Melancholy, yes but not depression (okay looking back maybe a little depression… 😕. Nostalgia certainly, but still not fully descriptive. Bittersweet, now that is close. Lacking maybe just a fragment of a feeling of loss.

I close down the Kindle app and put it away.

Happiness, that I am spending time with an old friend. Remembering past times and places that are not real, but still impact and resonate in memory.

I tried to grip it and twist it into submission by naming it.

I am frozen by this simple action. Frozen by this feeling crashing, like storm waves on cliffs. Inexorable, sadness and happiness, mixed as one and the same. Sadness that this is the final chapter in a book I already know the ending of. And no more shall be, once that back cover closes.
November 24, 2024 at 11:47 PM
Such a simple action and yet out of my ability to do. It is not because the book is bad, it is like every Discworld novel. Funny, witty, sad, full of meanings, insight, and fantastical (awful even*)!

I recently (2015) purchased the final Terry Pratchett novel 'The Shepherd's Crown'. Digital and Print. Because, well this is where that roads journey ends. A little over 10% in, and suddenly I can't continue. I am unable to flip the digital page.
