Rumbling of thunder to both the NE and NW of us now 😬

It seems like two cells of thunder heading around Mosgiel right now.

I'm having a mini freak out right now. They're not taking pictures of the garden thankfully, it's a mess. Just me and a plant 😆

Our first frost is in May, and our last one is late October/first week of November 😬

No it's not too late at all, I have put my seeds in yet. It's my next job to do.
November 2, 2025 at 9:04 PM
The seeds are quite chunky, and if I sent them by post, there's no guarantee that they won't get squished by NZ Post's mechanised letter rollers during sorting 😬

We use our solar panels to run our heat pump as an air conditioner on hot summer days

There are small wind turbines for homes available in NZ...

I think it's worth the time to give solar installers a call, and get them to work out the maths for you. We got 3 quotes, and eventually went with a local company called Dunedin Solar who are specialists who are all trained abseilers, it cut down the install cost.

We do export in winter, but not as much. Dunedin gets a lot of frosts, which means lots of sunny days to keep our battery topped up. We use our woodfire to heat our house in winter, and we cook on it, so we aren't using power to keep us warm.
October 29, 2025 at 9:17 PM
We let our our neighbours drop off their frozen foods to go into our half empty chest freezer to keep their food cold until the power went back on.

Last week during the big spring wind storm we lost mains grid power for 8 hours, and our solar panels and battery kept our home powered indefinitely, depending on the days afterward.
October 29, 2025 at 9:13 PM
We live in Dunedin, and we invested in solar panels and a battery 3 years ago, and for 6 months of the year in spring-summer-autumn we don't rely on mains power at all, and export a lot of our power to the grid. The exporting of power helps pay for our connection charge.
