Obtaining access to other platforms & levels on the island is going to help you to expand your settlement & gather more resources. That's where ladders come in.
Empty-handed Craftlings or those with tools, will use the ladders so you'll need to find ways to transport resources where you need them.

Coins are a resource that you always need to ensure you have enough to expand. There are a variety of ways you can earn or collect coins, but by far the easiest is clicking on the floating barrel when it passes by.

You've chopped down trees you need to expand your settlement but your Craftlings keep delivering them to the market...
Deactivating buildings helps you to manage where your resources go. The building will display a padlock icon and will stop collecting resources until you activate it again.

Production chains are important in Craftlings. Provide the required resources to the building to produce the tools you need to expand. These buildings will display a yellow triangle pointing down to show what resource you need and a green triangle pointing up to show what tool you'll produce.

Unlocking more resources, more buildings and more usables is done by levelling up. Each new level achieved provides you with additional ways to expand your settlement.
