President Marcos Jr., instead of heeding the demand of the people for accountability and justice, is the one stalling the impeachment of Sara Duterte in an attempt to preserve his power.

Vice President Sara Duterte has brazenly evaded accountability and investigation, enabling corruption, repression, and the misuse of public funds.

Meta should also address its algorithmic control over the content it feeds its users, as it is being leveraged by harmful groups to further spread misinformation and disinformation, causing real-world harms.

Meta should instead use technology well within its capability to enable and enhance well-trained fact-checkers to minimize the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation.

While a feature like Community Notes may seem democratic, it is easily exploitable especially by ruling elites who have the resources to co-opt this feature. This leaves Meta users even more exposed to misleading or false information.

While Zuckerberg acknowledges mistakes and weaknesses in the moderation of Meta’s platforms, he fails to mention how Meta’s algorithms have been exploited to influence the political leanings of certain groups of people, directly impacting elections in several countries, including the Philippines.

In a video on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook profile, he claims that this is a bid to “restore free expression” on their platforms. He reasons that they are getting rid of fact-checkers because they have been “too politically biased.”

The government should pursue digital literacy programs to equip its citizenry with the knowledge to protect themselves and their communities from exploitative technologies.

As more and more of our daily activities become intertwined with technology, governments should take a more active approach to protecting their citizens’ right to privacy.

Big Tech companies have been designing their products (devices, applications) to collect voluminous information about their customers, as well as manipulate their behavior and influence their opinions.
