Yes you do because targeted traffic stops conducted by experienced officers are also a terrific tool for crime reduction and intel gathering. I can’t count the number of times in my career when a “routine stop” led to the discovery of something way more serious than a simple traffic infraction.

My jurisdiction has one of the strictest firearms legislation in Europe and we still have to approach every suspect as possibly armed… because he just might be.

Hate to burst your bubble but that’s the way things are in Europe too (where I’ve been working in an armed LE capacity for 25 yrs). Unless you live in an authoritarian society with really draconian enforcement and sentencing you’ll always have criminals with guns.

I think that Bellingcat dude (Eliot Whatshisname?) wrote a very knowledgeable and disturbingly accurate series of posts on this subject the other day. His main argument as I understood it was that current democratic institutions’ fact-checking and deliberation processes are way too slow…

I just read „American Nations“ by Colin Woodard and he makes a convincing argument that the slave holders of the Deep South and the Chesapeake tidewater were in fact direct descendants of Anglo-Norman nobility by way of Barbados plantation owners and viewed themselves as such.
