A helicopter contrail is not something you see everyday. Concern: this is about the height of fixed wing aircraft lining up for the nearest airport.

Observing Flag Day #nokingsday in my living room.

Penzeys gave me this RESIST because my “backyard is where America’s fate is to be determined.” I have a mission to share the RESIST “with people in need of a tasty seasoning to brighten their day.” A glass jar that contains Holland Whole Blue Poppy Seed from Penzeys sitting on a kitchen countertop. When I fell in love with the “Lemon-Poppy Seed Waffles” recipe that came with a Cuisinart Waffle Maker, I had to find a place that I could get a bulk supply of poppy seeds at a reasonable price. Happy Old Rock 🪨 Day!

Physiographically speaking, we live in the Piedmont Upland. The rocks that form the steps onto the deck are our bedrock lithology: greenstone (schist). They were formed between 570 and 550 million years ago. They are part of the Catoctin Formation stratigraphic unit.

Wonderful weekend of wintersowing to celebrate the Solstice and 4th Sunday of Advent.

Sun stops at south point and has started its journey back toward the north. 🎉🥳

Sunrise over the mountain on the Winter Solstice. We are on the west side of the mountain. It only takes about an hour after official sunrise for us to actually see it. Raised beds with cattle panel arched trellis between them. Four white Adirondack chairs to watch the sunset with a bonfire. Recycled water bottle in foreground with Wild Blue Phlox wintersown today (seed packet said ~25 seeds—there were 44–we will see what comes up). Three recycled gallon jugs in mid-ground wintersown with Korea Tea on the Solstice (seed packet said 10 seeds—there were 12–last year all germinated but not all survived). Each of the raised beds has an outer border of garlic 🧄! Sweet Potato Broth ingredients in a large pot on the stove. Washington Post recipe “Sweet Potato, Collard and Black-Eyed Pea Soup”. It is a sweet potato broth with a bunch of vegetables and greens. We are substituting black beans for the black-eyed peas. Solstice plus one sunset over the hills to the west of us. Deciduous trees in the mid-ground and a holly in the foreground.

Sundogs at SJRCS. Sundogs are colored spots of light that develop due to the refraction of light through ice crystals. They are located approximately 22 degrees either left, right, or both, from the sun, depending on where the ice crystals are present. The colors usually go from red closest to the sun, out to blue on the outside of the sundog.
